Following the approval of the European Regulation on the reuse of water for agricultural use and the amendment made in 2023 of the Consolidated Text of the Water Law, it was necessary to complete the regulations.
The Royal Decree 1620/2007, of December 7, which establishes the legal regime for the reuse of reclaimed water has been repealed by a new one, Royal Decree 1085/2024, of October 22, which approves the Regulations for water reuse and modifies various royal decrees regulating water management.
The new law marks the legal regime that establishes the essential intervention of the competent authority with a double enabling function: firstly, regarding the urban wastewater regeneration activity, so that reclaimed water achieves the proper quality based on the further use for which it will be used, and secondly, regarding the exclusive use that can be made of the reclaimed water. Thanks to this new law, safety is guaranteed in the use of reclaimed water, since it will be subject to the risk management plans, and the health authorities and basin organisations will ensure its correct use.
