On 26 November, the ESNI Working Group led by NOVAFERT, held its planning meeting on sustainability assessment to discuss with other EU-funded projects methodologies, common approaches and scopes for the Life Cycle Assessment.
Representatives of RELEAF, ReNu2Cycle, NENUPHAR and NOVAFERT in charge of different sections of the sustainability assessment of nutrient recovery technology or bio-based fertilisers met to talk about the findings, challenges and methodologies in the field of the sustainability assessment.
Participants remarked, among other points, the boundaries in the assessment and comparison of emerging nutrient recycling technologies at small scale, the integration of the comparison with commercial counterparts, or the social benefits and trade offs of these technologies and products.
Among the priorities identified in the research also deserves attention the limitations in common methodologies for assessing the socio-economic aspects of the technologies and management practices.
As an agreement, the Working Group on Sustainability will treat these aspects in future webinars during the 2025.
